Abstract

The relevance of the thought of the philosopher and grammarian Bhartṛhari (5th c. CE) for the thinkers belonging to the Pratyabhijñā’s tradition (Somānanda, Utpaladeva and Abhinavagupta, 10th – 11th c. CE) has long been acknowledged. For instance, both argued for a nondualistic view of reality and stressed the role of language in humans’ engagement with the world. In this talk I will review the affinities between the two sides with a particular focus on two  notions the Pratyabhijñā thinkers drew from Bhartṛhari. These ideas were critical to the development of the school’s conceptual framework, as well as to their polemics with the Buddhists. The first notion is that a cognition cannot be the object of another cognition, otherwise it would cease to be what is and would become itself a content of knowledge. The second notion is that consciousness boils down to a conceptual activity that synthesizes ‘bare’ cognitions, an activity without which no knowledge can be obtained.
